"Load Up the Derby Car; We're Going to Akron!"
Originally issued in 1969 as AMT-T-312 1968 El Camino with Soap Box Derby Car, the Kats at AMT came up with a great plan. Since the 1969 El Camino tooling was no longer available, but the Soap Box Derby Car was still available, why not redo the kit as an all new 1968 El Camino with Soap Box Derby Car? The result is a fantastic new issue of an iconic kit that is sure to bring back nostalgic memories of a different time. As an added bonus the '68 El Camino is from modern the tooling era creating an irresistible package.
The official AMT Press release on this kit goes like this: "The Kats at AMT have dug deep again into the historic tooling vault. Now they’ve uncovered the 1/25 scale soap box derby racer mini kit! In keeping with the original Derby Champions theme, they’ve paired it up with the super-detailed 1968 El Camino tooling, created during the “Mueller Era,” to create the Derby Champs II kit! Optional Torq-Thrust wheels have been added to the El Camino along with beautiful 2-in-1 pad printed tires. They’ve got a red pinstripe on one side and Goodyear lettering on the other. But that’s not all - check out the all new expanded decal sheet, bonus display base and vintage-style packaging. This irresistible, value-packed combo will be a sure hit with modelers of all ages! Finish first with AMT!"
