In January 1973 the GTO2000 went on sale, powered by the newly developed Astron 80 engine and featuring a completely refurbished exterior and interior design. The car was available in three grades: SL, GS, and GSR. The GS grades were powered by a twin carburetor-mounted Astron 80 engine with boosted compression ratio capable of 125ps, which provided a combination of power and quiet smoothness normally found only in 8-cylinder powerplants. The top-of-the-line GSR came with an air dam skirt on its front, screw-mounted FRP front and rear fenders and 70% aspect ratio steel radial tires as standard features. The car blew away the competition with its 2000cc engine, winning the hearts of a new generation of drivers.
