It’s the 50th Anniversary of the stylish Studebaker Avanti and AMT is
releasing a commemorative issue!
The Avanti was publicly introduced on April 26, 1962, simultaneously at
the New York International Automobile Show and at the Annual Studebaker
Shareholders' Meeting. Rodger Ward, winner of the 1962 Indianapolis
500, received a Studebaker Avanti as part of his prize package, thus
becoming the first private owner of an Avanti. A Studebaker Lark
convertible was the Indianapolis pace car that year and the Avanti was
named the honorary pace car.
Production problems and supplier delays plagued the early Avanti's.
Sadly, in December of 1963, Studebaker closed its production facilities
in Southbend, Indiana, sounding the apparent death knell to the new
Avanti. However, in 1964, the Avanti name, tooling and plant space were
sold to two South Bend, Indiana, Studebaker dealers, Nate Altman and
Leo Newman, the first of a succession of entrepreneurs to manufacture
small numbers of Avanti replicas and new design cars through 2006.
The original Studebaker Avanti has been described as one of the more
significant milestones of the postwar industry.
Similarly, with opening doors and hood, and tons of optional parts the
AMT Avanti kit from the original Trophy series has been described as one
of the milestones of plastic automotive kit engineering. Now fully
restored with all the original parts and sporting the original box art,
it's time for all of us to celebrate the this iconic classic's golden
anniversary.
Each kit includes an exclusive 14 page historical booklet chock full of
early artist renditions, actual production line photos, and retro
vintage advertisements.
